Magical Moments: toy drive for kids fighting cancer

10 YEARS, ONE MAGICAL MISSION: to bring hope and comfort by donating toys to kids fighting cancer.

From Harry's magical wand to Elsa's mysterious ice powers, magical stories remind us that even during tough times, there’s always room for a bit of magic. Join Cornerstone’s 10th annual Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month toy drive as we collect magical toys and books for patients at local children’s hospitals during the month of September.

To celebrate our magical mission, we're collecting toys and books from magical stories like Frozen, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Percy Jackson, Moana, Encanto, Star Wars, and many more! This magical theme allows us to donate toys and books for all ages, from babies to teens.

Every September since 2016, in honor of Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, we've partnered with local children's hospitals to help fill their toy closets. Toys are a comforting "normal" for pediatric patients facing serious illnesses, encouraging play time during treatment.

And, while we raise awareness for Pediatric Cancer Month with our toy drive, the toys are used by patients fighting all kinds of illnesses at the children's hospitals.

The hospitals were facing a shortage of toys for patients under 3. We launched Toddler Toy Box in 2024, donating 1,200+ baby and toddler toys and books to local hospitals.

Our team collected all kinds of games - including card games, puzzles, and even video games - for local pediatric patients. We donated a total of 1,176 games to local hospitals.

Squishmallows are one of the most commonly requested toys at the hospitals. We collected Squishmallows of all shapes and sizes for pediatric patients, donating more than 1,100 squishy friends to pediatric patients.

A creative outlet can be a great distraction for kids facing serious health issues. Creating Courage collected more than 1,000 creative items like coloring books, crayons, sewing kits, sketch pads and more for patients.

During the pandemic, hospital playrooms were shut down to limit contact points, so hospitals needed bedside play for patients. LEGOs are easily disinfected and a fun pastime for patients, so our team collected and donated 850+ sets to the hospitals.

In 2019, Children's Hospital of Michigan was part of a pilot program allowing children to drive into surgery and other procedures on mini ride-on cruisers, controlled by a parent or nurse. This made a scary transition more relaxed and fun, leading to lower anxiety for pediatric patients. CCF donated 21 ride-on cruisers to the local children's hospitals.

Our third teddy bear drive brought in more than 500 teddy bears and other stuffed animals for pediatric cancer patients.

Our second teddy bear drive brought in more than 300 teddy bears and other stuffed animals for pediatric cancer patients. Freddy the Teddy's appearance on the news brought in donations from all around the metro Detroit area.

Our very first toy drive in 2016 was a teddy bear drive for the Children's Hospital of Michigan, collecting 300+ teddy bears for patients.
